Independent Workshop vs Authorised Service Centre

· Roda Editorial · Updated

Every car owner eventually chooses between the brand's authorised service centre and an independent workshop. The right answer depends mostly on two things: whether the car is still under warranty, and what kind of work it needs. This guide compares the two and suggests a simple way to decide for each visit.

Authorised service centres

An authorised service centre is appointed by the brand's distributor in Malaysia.

What you get:

  • Warranty protection. Servicing follows the manufacturer's schedule and is recorded in the brand's system, which matters if you need to make a warranty claim.
  • Genuine parts and the specified oil.
  • Brand diagnostic equipment and software updates. Newer cars rely on electronics, and some faults can only be read or fixed with the brand's tools.
  • Recalls and service campaigns. The service centre checks whether your car has an open recall and does the recall work, usually at no cost to you.
  • A fixed menu price for routine services, often published on the brand's website.

The downsides are usually cost, booking lead times and less flexibility. A service centre may recommend replacing parts on schedule where an independent mechanic would test first.

Independent workshops

Independent workshops range from small neighbourhood shops to specialists in one brand or one system, such as gearboxes, air-conditioning or electrical work.

What you get:

  • Lower labour rates in many cases, and a choice of genuine, original equipment or aftermarket parts.
  • Flexibility. You can often walk in, wait for the job, and talk to the mechanic directly.
  • Specialist skills for older cars, out-of-production models and modified cars.
  • Repairs instead of replacements, where the part can be fixed safely.

The risks are uneven quality and less paperwork. A good independent workshop is excellent value. A poor one can cause problems that cost more than the money saved.

Warranty: read the booklet first

Warranty terms are set by each manufacturer and differ between brands. Before you take a car that is under warranty to an independent workshop, check the warranty booklet or the brand's official website for:

  • Whether servicing must be done at an authorised centre to keep the warranty.
  • Whether genuine parts and a specified oil are required.
  • What records you need to show if you make a claim.
  • Whether the warranty transfers to the next owner, which matters when you sell.

For example, as of October 2026, Perodua's FAQ says servicing at a non-authorised centre voids its warranty, Proton lists servicing at non-authorised outlets and non-approved lubricants among its exclusions, and UMW Toyota says its warranty is fully transferable to subsequent owners.

If the terms are unclear, ask the brand's customer service in writing and keep the reply. This is a question for the manufacturer, not the workshop.

A simple way to decide

  1. Under warranty: use an authorised centre for scheduled services and any warranty repair, unless the booklet clearly allows otherwise.
  2. Recall or campaign notice: always an authorised centre.
  3. Out of warranty, routine service: either. Compare quotes and choose a workshop you are comfortable with.
  4. Out of warranty, complex fault: a specialist independent workshop can be a good choice, especially for older models. For electronic faults on newer cars, the brand's equipment may still be needed.
  5. Tyres, batteries, wipers and bulbs: any tyre or battery shop with the right parts. You do not need a service centre for these.

How to judge an independent workshop

  • Ask whether they regularly work on your brand and model.
  • Ask for a written quote with parts and labour separated, before work starts.
  • Ask what brand of parts they will use, and keep the boxes or receipts.
  • Ask to see the old parts.
  • Ask what warranty they give on their work.
  • Check that they will record the mileage and work done on the receipt, so your service history stays complete.

Keep the history in one place

Whatever you choose, keep every receipt with the date, mileage and work done. A complete service history helps when you claim warranty, and it helps buyers when you sell. Buyers on the used market often ask for it before they view a car.
